The world of online games changes drastically every year. With all these new games being developed, you’d think there would be new MMOs (Massively Multiplayer Online) to play. Sadly, we only have a handful of decent new-ish MMOs to play in the US.
We have put this guide together to highlight popular new MMOs. We also highlight MMOs that are still popular and have had recent patches. Let us know in the comments if we missed any major MMOs that are playable and popular in 2019.
Why did we choose these MMOs?
We grew up with MMOs being games that allowed for hundreds and even thousands of players to play together in a single instance online. This is why we did not include new “online” games like Dauntless, which is a great game but it does not allow for more than 4 player co-op (besides the central hub).
This 2019 edition of New MMOs was created out of love for the industry and we hope it helps you find your next MMO to play. Let’s jump right into the list of the best new MMOs.

Let’s start with the newest, playable MMOs available in 2019. These are all the new MMOs the community has decided are worth mentioning.
Crowfall [CF]
ArtCraft, Travian Games | Action-combat, MMORPG
Crowfall is new to the PC MMO circuit. This action-combat MMO RPG focuses heavily on PvP and alliance wars. Choose an alliance, a vessel (race) and class to join the battle.
It is still in Pre-Alpha, but currently playable. You can purchase “Backer” packs and jump into the action today. They also offer a free BETA sign up if you are looking to test the game once it finally reaches BETA. Access to both ALPHA and BETA can be found here.
Crowfall focuses on PvP campaigns. These seasonal, three faction war campaigns take place on dynamic, procedurally generated worlds. Fight for victory, craft new gear, weapons and vessels (bodies) to strengthen your Crow (character) for battle.
You the character are a Crow, an immortal spirit sent by the gods to defend the dying worlds. Your vessel is your body and can be customized with different race options. Your race will determine which classes are available. Upon death, you only retain your equipped armor, adding a survival element to this MMO.

Crowfall is what we like to call a throne-war simulator. We took elements from survival games, strategy games and political simulators and married them with an open world, player driven, MMO setting.

Albion Online [AO]
Sandbox Interactive | Tab-target, MMORPG
This sandbox, medieval, fantasy, MMORPG officially released in 2017 as a purchase to play title. As of April 2019, they shifted to a free-to-play model, providing the option to become a Premium Member (aka purchase the game for benefits).
Albion Online focuses heavily on PvE, PvP, and player-driven economy. Players can own land and have the freedom to add taxation to players using their properties amenities. Zones are color-marked noting which areas are safe versus zones that attract PvP. This game has a survival element as well, upon death loot will drop, allowing other players the opportunity to steal it.
If you don’t like the chaos of PvP stick to the blue zones, the non-conflict areas. Kill mobs, complete quests, level up your destiny board, participate in open-world dungeons, fish, farm, build a home and craft. There is a little something in Albion Online for every playing style.

The most recent update (August 2019) brought players Guild Season 7. With this update brings guild challenges, castle outposts, new loot, and more opportunities to get your guild ranking higher. The most significant change will be the introduction of the biomes. Each biome will have its own flora and fauna. So will it will have its own mobs and it will bring its own resources.

Recently Updated MMOs
There aren’t many new MMOs out right now so let’s take a look at games that have a large active player base and have recently been updated.
Elder Scrolls Online [ESO]
ZeniMax Online Studios, Bethesda Softworks | Action combat, MMORPG
Explore the world of Tamriel in the second era, approximately one thousand years before the events of Skyrim. ESO is another MMO that is not technically new, but it is consistent in releasing content and continues to improve the game with new DLC and Chapters (content updates).
Elder Scrolls Online provides lots of lore and story to discover and play through. It is heavily quest focused and offers many skill lines to unlock. Explore the lore, map complete, quest, participate in dungeons, close portals of Daedric infestations (world events), and fight for your alliance in the PvP alliance war (battlegrounds). Minimal HUD features allow players to feel immersed in the environment, keeping true to the RP elements of the game. (No minimap, chat can is hidden)
Expansions offer new zones, new quests (story), new dungeons and in some cases a new class to play. For example, Elsweyr, the most recent expansion in 2019, in addition to the story, the new zone, and dungeons, it unlocked the Necromancer as a new class choice.
2019 ESO released Elsweyr, and in doing so, unveiled the year of Dragons. It can be purchased on their website, or in the Steam store. It is a new year-long chapter, and therefore not included with the ESO Plus subscription.

The Elder Scrolls Online, everything you need to know about it is right in the name. It’s Elder Scrolls, but its online. And when the team set out they wanted to create strategic real time combat. We wanted to create a lot of world emersion, we wanted to create a landscape that was rewarded exploration. But all that had to be brought together with really great social systems.

Elder Scrolls Online is purchase to play. All game content is purchasable for a fixed price. In addition to purchasing the game, players have the opportunity to purchase the ESO Plus membership. Guild Wars 2 [GW2]
ArenaNet, NCSOFT | Tab-target, MMORPG
Technically, Guild Wars 2 is not a new game. However, the GW2 team consistently releases new content on a regular basis. In 2019, we have seen the end of Living World Season 4, multiple festivals (Dragon Bash, Festival of the Four Winds), community events and a look at the upcoming Living World Season 5. That being said, Guild Wars 2 is another MMO to check out in 2019.
The world of Tyria brings us a unique META (world/zone) events to participate in, dungeons and fractals to explore and complete, crafting rare armor and legendary weapons, collecting gear and skins, completing trials and fighting against other players in PvP and World vs World (a constant battle for territory and rank).
In addition to the base game activities, expansions have been released over the years introducing new mechanics to the game. Heart of Thorns brought gliding and a few other utilities to GW2. Path of Fire introduced mounts to Tyria. Each mount providing a special set of skills and mobility utilities for easier navigation and exploration. Making mounts in GW2 arguably the most unique mounts across all MMOs.

The thing we’re trying to do with all the mounts is have them have very different methods of locomotion. So it’s not just an aesthetic change, when you get a new mount, it’s also a bit of a gameplay and gamestyle change.

Final Fantasy 14 [FFXIV]
SQUARE ENIX | Tab-target, MMORPG
Final Fantasy 14, yet another game that is not “new” per se, but has an active player base. Currently, at the time of writing this article, FFXIV has a daily average of 21,000 active players based on Steam Charts, although this does not account for the players on the pc game client or PS4 player base.
Defend Eorzea from rising darkness as a Warrior of Light. Participate in raids, dungeons, PVP, and arcade modes. Play with friends or adventure solo on a multitude of quest lines. This MMO is instance-based and is not a free-roaming open world. Green icons on the map will indicate traveling points to different instances within zones.
A unique mechanic of this game is that a single character can level all of the classes. This is done so by simply equipping the weapon associated with the class. This gives players allot more freedom to test and play all skills. Another skill feature is combos. Skills will highlight in the skill bar when a skill can be combed with another. Making for more dynamic combat.

In addition to the previous list, FFXIV comes out with consistent expansions. The most recent, released in 2019, Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers. Shadowbringers expansion brings new content to FFXIV including; new story, new challenges, new jobs (class evolutions) and races.

How do you play Final Fantasy 14?
Final Fantasy XIV requires a subscription to play. In addition, all expansions must be purchased to play the content. Free trial accounts are available, players can play free up to level 35. Black Desert Online Remastered [BDO]
Pearl Abyss | Action-combat, MMORPG
Black Desert Online, a Korean MMO, with a daily user base averaging at 16,000 players. Originally released in 2015, but most recently “remastered” in 2018.
Black Desert Online has the standard features; economy, questing, exploration, dungeons, world bosses and crafting. The most recent expansion, Drieghan, released late 2018, and in January 2019, BDO added a 50 player Battle Royale mode.
This game is a unique take on the MMO genre. It offers players the opportunity to complete many AFK tasks for leveling and earning in-game currency. It provides the players with a node system to have their own personal housing and send their “workers” out to collect or complete tasks that earn gold. So if you are someone who likes auto-running, and a variety of other tasks that can be completed while away from your PC, you may want to take a look into Black Desert Online.
The combat in this game looks and feels satisfying. With animations that feel similar to Mortal Combat. A feature that is unique to BDO. When activating combos, you get a sense of the vibrations coming through the monitor. Making the combat immersive, dynamic and overall a satisfying experience.

Upcoming MMOs
It feels like there are so many potentially game-changing (pun intended) MMOs on the horizon. Let’s take a look at the communities favorite upcoming MMO games.
Ashes of Creation [AoC]
Intrepid Studios | Action-Combat, MMORPG
New to the MMO scene, Ashes of Creation is still in Early Access. Intrepid Studios goals are to bring to life a new take on the MMO experience, offering a unique node system that levels alongside the players progress. This non-faction, fantasy MMO was successfully funded by Kickstarter, raising a little over three million dollars.
The players will decide how civilization evolves. Activities and goals accomplished by the players will dynamically change the structure of the world. Whether it’s evolving a zone into a massive city or destroying a city down to make room for another, the players will dictate which civilizations thrive, and which don’t survive.
The evolved nodes will unlock new gameplay throughout the regions. A fully evolved node may trigger a world event that devastates the node that spawned it. Allot is still a mystery since the game is not officially released yet. Hopefully, soon we can jump in and experience these dynamic worlds for ourselves.

ArcheAge Unchained [AAU]
Gamigo, XLGAMES | Sandbox MMORPG
The original ArcheAge MMO that launched in late 2014 is back with a new take on the classic. Trion broke our hearts with a steep pay to play model and left us feeling betrayed time and time again. This time, the team promises ArcheAge Unchained will provide the whole experience to every player without having to empty your wallet, hints the name “Unchained”.
ArcheAge: Unchained promises to be a “purchase-to-play” game, no subscription model. The Unchained version will be a completely new game, separate from the old game. If you still play the original ArcheAge, don’t worry, Trion has confirmed those servers will still be maintained. ArcheAge surprisingly still has an active community so there should be a decent amount of player upon launch. Also, you will not be able to transfer old characters or items to ArcheAge Unchained.
Gamigo and XLGAMES promise a revamped, better version of the former ArcheAge by Trion Worlds. Sail, farm, trade, travel, battle, steal and conquer. All the aspects we loved about the old game. In addition, Unchained promises to bring us “220 interchangeable classes by combining the powers of 12 skill sets”, giving players the freedom to build and play a custom character. Not sure what this means yet, but I can assume the class system will be similar to FFXIV or ESO.

Last Oasis [LO]
Donkey Crew | Open-world Survival MMO
Last Oasis, another game that is not yet released. According to the Last Oasis Steam Store Page, the game is set to release September 3rd, 2019.
Life on earth has changed as we know it, a planet has crashed into earth disrupting and ending earth’s orbit. This new, nomadic, survival MMO forces players to move and to keep moving to outrun the Scorching rays of the sun. Making the fight for territory continuous.
This game changes up the survival, base building genre. Bases will need to be mobile and will be forced to relocate as the game progresses. Bases can be packed up and protected, allowing players to take their loot to different maps. Gameplay footage gives an impression of fast-paced ships on land, but a lot is still a mystery.

Temtem
Crema Games | MMO Creature Collection Adventure
Discover and hunt for TEMTEM on the floating islands of Omninesia. This Pokémon inspired MMO brings us creatures to catch, breed and battle all within a massively multiplayer online setting. Embark on an adventure with friends to discover new species and battle other tamers along the way.
Temtem successfully surpassed their Kickstarter goal of $70K, raising a little over $570,000. Temtem is predicted to launch on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Steam and XBOX One with a multitude of features.
The core function of this game is to catch, breed, battle and collect creatures. Although we have not yet played the game for ourselves, the Wikipedia Temem page has about 60 creatures. However, they are numbered, and the highest number is 161, so potentially there are 161 Temem available to collect, and these 60 are the only ones currently documented.
In addition to launching on all four platforms, they plan to include a multitude of base features upon game launch.

When does Temtem come out?

Oath
ReadyUp Studios | Action-combat, MMORPG
Brand new MMO, Oath successfully doubled their Kickstarter goal of $35,00 and continued funding on their main site. Currently, the game has raised over $100,000 but is not currently playable. The developers estimate a playable version to be released in December 2019.
Since no official game has been released we cannot officially list features of the game. But we can speculate a set number of features based on the stretch goals. Oath MMO so far has reached 5 out of the 7 stretch goals, promising the addition of; a weather system, ocean activities, a global farming system, advanced content wars and monarchy, and advanced mount skills.

Lost Ark
Smilegate, Tripod | Action-combat, MMORPG
If you’re into ARPG’s like Diablo or Path of Exile, Lost Ark should definitely be on your radar. Unlike the popular dungeon crawler style, Lost Ark is set in an open-world and is classified as an Isometric ARPG MMO.
Although Lost Ark has not launched in the United States, we have been told Westerners will be able to set sail very soon. That’s right, you can actually sail around an immersive open-world exploring new continents and hunting for treasure. Over seven classes will be available and new episodes will be released to keep this game fresh for players. Make sure to subscribe to get notified when this game is available for US players.
